Ann Hart Marquis

Ann Hart Marquis is a painter who combines her love of color with her reverence of nature. She first picked up a paint brush in 2000 in France and was immediately captivated. She sold her first painting at that time. Most recently, she had a solo exhibit in 2009, "Ann Hart Marquis, Color as Spirit IV" at Incognito Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her solo exhibits "Color as Spirit III" and "Color as Spirit II" were held in 2008 and 2007 at the Studios on Madison. These exhibits were preceded by a three-person studio show in 2006. Her first group show, “Still Lifes,” was held at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2005.

Since Ann first started painting in Soreze, France, she has been studying painting extensively in France and New Mexico. She prefers to paint in acrylics and oils, sometimes combining them in the same painting.

Ann was born in San Francisco and her family soon moved to the rolling hills of Bennett Valley near Santa Rosa, California. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and spends two months in southern France each summer. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida International University in Miami, Florida and a graduate degree from the University of New Mexico.

Most of her paintings are done on linen or canvas, in acrylic or oil, on deep gallery-wrapped canvas. She sometimes applies a silk paper or a heavy gel medium to the surface in order to create texture and terrain for the paint. She then applies several layers of color to add complexity and mood.

Gallery-wrapped canvas (see below) is a way of stretching canvas onto the wooden frame so that the cloth covers the sides of the paintings. Ann continues the design around the sides to give the paintings more depth and to continue the perspective. Gallery-wrapped canvases tend to have a modern, contemporary look. They are ready to hang, no frame necessary.
