Ann Hart Marquis
I am inspired by nature. I grew up in the country in northern California surrounded by natural beauty. Since childhood, nature has provided me with a sense of being part of something overpoweringly grand. I particularly like to paint trees. Trees are primeval, fixed, grounded. Some almost seem to have a wisdom about them. They inspire me by their size, diversity, longevity and perseverance.
I am also inspired by color and the way colors interact with each other. Color allows me to explore the drama and spirituality of nature. It helps me to tell a story. I like to experiment with color, mixing unusual hues or layering one color on the top of another.
Sometimes I work on a series of subjects in order to capture the complexities of a particular theme. In all of my work, however, I am interested in the mood and feeling that my paintings convey. My paintings are not an objective representation of what I see, rather a vision of how I interpret a natural setting.
